A special Sunday report of The Gold Forecast
Gold and silver advanced in early Asian trading as intensifying Middle East tensions triggered a fresh wave of safe-haven buying. Joint U.S. and Israeli military strikes on Iran over the weekend—reportedly resulting in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei—have sharply increased geopolitical risk and unsettled global markets.
“Gold remains the clearest barometer of investor fear,” said market analyst Josh Gilbert in emailed comments. The April futures contract of surged to $5,369 per ounce in morning trade and is now up roughly 24% year to date, reinforcing its role as the primary hedge during periods of geopolitical stress.
Bullion rose more than 1.3% on Monday, reaching its highest level in over a month as investors rotated into defensive assets. The conflict has disrupted maritime traffic through the oil-rich Gulf, heightening concerns over energy supply routes and broader regional stability.
Iran has reportedly retaliated with strikes on U.S. assets across multiple countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq, and Syria, further amplifying risk aversion across financial markets.
According to Nicky Shiels, head of metals strategy at MKS PAMP, the scale of the attack—and the signal it sends regarding Washington’s willingness to deploy military force—should help raise the structural floor for gold prices.
“Typically, the initial Sunday open spike on geopolitical headlines tends to fade,” Shiels noted. “However, the scope for Iranian retaliation introduces a genuine wildcard, which could sustain safe-haven flows rather than trigger the usual pullback.”
Silver tracked gold higher, supported by both safe-haven demand and its correlation to broader precious-metals momentum, as investors sought protection against escalating geopolitical and energy-market risks.
